Souls Funds Medic Program For Burmese Refugees In Thailand

The Mae Tao Clinic (MTC), founded and directed by Dr. Cynthia Maung, provides a free health care service for refugees, migrant workers, and other individuals who cross the porous border from Burma to Thailand.

After decades of military rule, ensuing terror, systematic human rights abuses and abject poverty, over 100,000 Burmese refugees cross the porous border into Thailand each year. The basic human needs of migrants from Burma are vast and the free medical services offered at MTC are always stretched to capacity. A staff of five physicians, 140 health workers and 100 support personnel provide comprehensive health services that include inpatient and outpatient medical care, a surgical unit, blood transfusions, reproductive health, child health, eye care, and prosthetics for landmine and accident victims.

As part of the clinic's varied and progressive program, MTC trains local interns for periods of three month to a year. In 2008, Souls Foundation will provide a stipend to cover the training costs for 25 interns. The aim of this internship program is to equip the interns with vital clinical skills both in diagnostics and treatment. The program will also provide them with a broad understanding and skill base with which to work effectively within the wider community.
